Chapter 12

A week later, Elaina was surprised when a knock sounded at her door. It was eight in the evening. Jamie was at the kitchen table finishing his homework.

For a moment, Elaina nearly skipped toward the door with a grin on her face, hoping she would find Ty on the other side. But then she realized he wouldn’t show up at her house like that. They hadn’t told Jamie about their relationship. He wouldn’t make that decision without checking with her first.

Besides, she’d spoken to him every night. Not for as long as she was used to but he always checked in at least for a few minutes. He wasn’t due back for another week. She had no idea where he even was in the country. Could be Hawaii for all she knew.

Elaina was surprised to find Bethany and Theo standing on her porch when she opened the door. Bethany was shaking and her hair was in a messy ponytail.

“I’m so sorry to bother you. I needed, uh, can you talk?”

Elaina opened the door wider. “Of course. Come in.” She could tell Bethany was keeping something from Theo. The kid looked oblivious though. He had his head down, playing something on his phone.

Elaina stroked his shoulder. He was getting too old to have someone ruffle his hair. Jamie hated when she did that. “Hey, Theo. Jamie’s in the kitchen working on his homework. Why don’t you go join him?”

Theo glanced over his shoulder at the backpack he was wearing. “Mom made me bring mine along.”

“Ah, good. How about you guys get that done, then I’ll pull out the ice cream?”

Theo gave her a polite smile. “Sure.” The kid was kind. He had a great mom and a fantastic uncle, but he wasn’t overly humored by the idea of being rewarded for homework with something as boring as ice cream. Nevertheless, he shuffled toward the kitchen. He’d been here a few times. He knew where to go.

Bethany nearly fell apart the moment Theo was out of sight. Tears ran down her cheeks and she was wringing her hands together. “I didn’t have anywhere else to go. No one else besides Ty knows about my ex.”

Elaina guided her to the sofa and sat next to her. “What happened?”

“He’s missing.”

Elaina drew in a deep breath. “He broke his parole?” She knew the entire story, including the fact that Bethany wasn’t the only one worried. Ty was genuinely concerned about what Rick might do too.

“Yes. Ty’s friend Marcus called me an hour ago. He said Rick cut off the ankle monitor. His parole officer found it in his apartment. He’s been missing for at least a day.”

Stay calm. Think, Elaina. “Okay. It’s possible he’s gone off to do any number of things with no thought of you at all.” Elaina was making shit up off the top of her head in order to calm Bethany’s nerves.

Bethany nodded absentmindedly.

“Ty said he doesn’t know where you live.”

“It wouldn’t take much to figure that out.”

She was right. “Okay, so you’ll stay here for a few days.
